How We’re Making GDEWB! More Eco-Friendly
At Gordon District Explorer Winter BLAST! (GDEWB!), we're committed to reducing our environmental footprint while delivering an exciting and memorable camp experience. Our approach centres on sustainability and eco-friendly practices, and we’ve carefully planned several initiatives to ensure the event operates as "green" as possible.
Recycling stations will be positioned throughout the campsite, with clearly marked bins for paper, plastics, and food waste. Informational signage will be placed next to each bin, educating participants about what can and cannot be recycled. Our goal is to encourage proper waste management and minimise contributions to landfill. We will also work closely with our waste collection partners to ensure that the materials are handled in the most environmentally responsible way.
2. Reusable Utensils and Water Bottles
To significantly reduce the use of single-use plastics, all participants will be encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles and mess kits (including plates, cups, and cutlery). We will install multiple water refill stations across the campgrounds to keep everyone hydrated without relying on disposable plastic bottles. By reducing waste through reusables, we’re hoping to inspire participants to adopt sustainable practices long after the event ends.
3. Carpooling & Shared Transport
To reduce the number of vehicles arriving at camp, we encourage participants to carpool or share transportation. Fewer vehicles mean lower carbon emissions and a reduced impact on the local environment. We also hope this initiative will foster a spirit of teamwork and community.
4. Leave No Trace Policy
A Leave No Trace policy will be in place at GDEWB!. Participants will be briefed on best practices to minimise their impact on the environment, including proper waste disposal and campsite cleanliness. At the end of the event, everyone will join a coordinated clean-up effort to ensure that the campsite is left exactly as it was found. This not only preserves the environment but also instils a sense of responsibility among participants.
To reduce paper waste, we will prioritise digital communication wherever possible. Information about the event, such as maps, important notices, and forms will be shared via email and other digital platforms in the lead-up to the event. On-site, we will use notice boards and verbal announcements to reduce the need for so many printed materials.
Daviot Scout Campsite is home to a range of wildlife and has many neighbours roundabout, we want to protect the natural habitats that make the area so special. Participants will be reminded to respect wildlife, avoid disturbing habitats, and follow guidelines that minimise disruption to local ecosystems. This includes keeping noise to a minimum in certain areas / times and ensuring all food waste is disposed of properly to avoid attracting animals.
By implementing these 6 steps, we’re working to make GDEWB! a sustainable and eco-conscious event, setting a high standard for future camps within the District and encouraging all participants to take responsibility for protecting the environment. We hope that these initiatives not only make this event greener but also inspire lifelong eco-friendly habits in our Explorer Network.
At GDEWB!, we’re committed to keeping our campsite clean and as eco-friendly as we can make it. Our "5 Ways to Rubbish" initiative encourages everyone to reduce their environmental impact by sorting waste; recycling, reusing materials, composting where possible, and disposing of rubbish properly. Together, we can protect the outdoors and make a positive difference!
Recycle paper and card to conserve resources and reduce waste. Use designated bins and consider reusing materials!
Sort plastic and tin items into recycling bins. Remember to rinse them before disposal to keep recycling clean!
Compost food scraps when possible to reduce landfill waste. Plan meals wisely to minimize leftover food!
Recycle glass bottles and jars in designated bins. Rinse them to prevent contamination and help the recycling process!
Dispose of non-recyclable items in general waste bins. Aim to minimize what goes here by recycling adequately!
